Harry the Dog – A Very Special Pet Portrait Session in Sutton Village

If you’ve ever stepped foot in the Duke of York in Sutton Village, or even spent time around the village itself, there’s a good chance you already know and love our local celebrity — Harry the dog.

Harry is a bit of a legend around here, so on Monday evening I had the absolute pleasure of photographing him in a special pet portrait session.

Meet Harry

As a child portrait photographer in Hull, photographing dogs is a little outside my usual comfort zone. But pet photography is something I’ve been considering adding to my photography services for a while, and I honestly couldn’t think of a better first model than our very own Harry.

One thing that surprised me during the session was just how many of the skills I’ve developed photographing children also applied to photographing Harry.

Being patient, reading body language, allowing your subject time to relax and, most importantly, not forcing a moment all made a huge difference. Just like with children, sometimes the best photographs happen when you step back, let them be themselves and wait for that natural moment.

Harry is the most beautiful, gentle dog, and his personality really came across during the shoot.

Rather than trying to force poses or make him do anything unnatural, the session was all about allowing Harry to simply be Harry.

That’s actually something I love about portrait photography in general — capturing genuine personalities rather than creating overly posed photographs. Whether I’m photographing children or pets, I want the finished images to feel natural and tell a little story.

And Harry certainly made my job easy!

A Local Photoshoot in Sutton Village

Because of Harry’s age, travelling any great distance wasn’t really an option, so we kept things local and headed to the park in Sutton Village.

Sometimes you really don’t need to travel far to create beautiful photographs. Local parks and outdoor spaces can provide everything you need, especially when you’re looking for natural, relaxed portraits.

The evening light, the surroundings and Harry’s gentle personality all came together to create a really lovely session.

Pet Photography Is Coming to Adam Hill Photography

Although my main passion is outdoor child portrait photography in Hull and East Yorkshire, this shoot has made one thing very clear — I’m most definitely going to venture into pet photography.

There’s something incredibly special about photographing our pets. They become such an important part of our families, yet we often don’t realise how quickly time passes.

Harry’s session was a lovely reminder of just how valuable photographs can be — not only as beautiful images, but as memories of the personalities and little characters we love so much.

So, watch this space! Pet portrait sessions will be making their way into Adam Hill Photography, and if Harry is anything to go by, I’m going to absolutely love photographing them.
